Associated Merchant search is not cancelling overlapping searches

If I type the letter n into the associated merchants field on an order, I get back all merchants with the letter n in them. If I type in the word 'nine' (which is a merchant I have), I get the search results as if I typed in 'n'. If I type in 'n', wait for the search results to complete and complete typing 'nine' I get back my merchant 'nine'. It seems like search is spawning a new search for each letter typed but not killing the search for the previous letters.
